About Us ...
Washita Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on April 16, 1943. The name "Washita" is from two Choctaw Indian words, "Owa Chito," meaning big hunt. This name was chosen because the Washita River encircles the town, and Clinton was originally known as "Washita Junction."
Clinton is the site of the Clinton Veteran's Center, one of several centers operated by the State of Oklahoma. The Cheyenne Tribal Center is also located in Clinton. Our chapter helps support these two centers through various activities and volunteer hours.
Meetings ...
We meet on the second Monday of the month, January through June and September through December, in downtown Clinton. The original route of old historic U.S. 66 Highway runs through downtown Clinton.
Our chapter holds an annual genealogy workshop at different libraries in the area. Washita Chapter, NSDAR, is also responsible for the first DAR Medal of Honor winner from the State of Oklahoma. This prestigious award was presented to Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford, a native of Weatherford, Oklahoma, at our national meeting, Continental Congress, in Washington, D.C.
